Anguishing

This painting sings of a quiet sentiment of helplessness, the quiet longing to be nearer to a completeness that may never quite come. The vessel for the journey may not match the spirit that steers. All that it requires of this world may only bring dread, as does one contemplate too deeply of great decisions when in quiet places. Let that blue bird fly, have it carry away time and the self, so we may leave what's left behind. And perhaps then, the artist may not be so separate from their experience.

Milan sculpts the figure as a 3D model in virtual reality, decides the composition, perspective and density of the lines on the computer, and turns the lines into G-code, the path for a CNC machine. Fitted with 3D-printed nozzles, the machine lays the lines on stretched canvas in ribbons of acrylic paint, which then dry for one to three weeks so that the relief stays intact.
